Leading a trad route is one of the purest & satisfying ways to explore the crags cliffs & mountains…although there is a nack to it! Our “Learn to Lead” course will cover a range of essential skills & techniques to help improve your knowledge & experience to help you lead climbing routes both safely & confidently.
what WE CAN COVER
EQUIPMENT & GEAR
Understanding & using the necessary climbing gear, including ropes, harnesses, helmets, carabiners, slings, & various types of protection (cams, nuts, hexes, etc.).
ANCHOR BUILDING
How to build strong & reliable anchors using natural features like cracks, trees, or boulders. This includes equalisation techniques & considerations for different types of anchors.
GEAR PLACEMENT
Techniques for selecting & placing protection gear, including assessment of rock quality, gear placement options, & assessing the strength of placements.
ROUTE PLANNING
Strategies for route selection, reading guidebooks or route descriptions & understanding the climbing environment.
RISK ASSESSMENT
Understanding the risks associated with lead climbing, fall factors, & mitigating risks through solid protection placements.
ABSEILING
Learning safe techniques
for descending after completing a route, including setting up abseiling anchors & abseiling procedures.
RESCUE TECHNIQUES
Basic rescue techniques in case of emergencies or problems on the route.
ETHICS & LEAVE NO TRACE
Discussion of ethical considerations in trad climbing, including minimising environmental impact & respecting access rules.
Who is this course for?
This course is perfect for those who want to learn to be independent trad leaders.
The course is designed for climbers who already have some experience in trad climbing & want to progress to leading climbs. You need to have a solid understanding of basic rock climbing techniques & have spent time seconding routes. Familiarity with the essential climbing gear, such as harnesses, helmets & belay equipment is a must. Participants should be comfortable with exposure to heights.

WhAT DO I NEED?
We’re not suggesting you to go out & spend all the money on all the latest technical kit, this is just a sensible list that in terms of keeping safe & comfortable, works. In the same vein , the weather on the day & the time of year will be big factors to help decide what you will & won’t pack. Ascent guides are more than happy to give advice and/or answer any questions you have regarding kit.
