CLIMBING Grades
ADJECTIVAL GRADE
The adjectival grade gives a sense of the overall difficulty of a climb. This can include aspects like seriousness, sustainment, technical difficulty, exposure, strenuousness, & rock quality. The grading system currently runs from Moderate to E11, which is barley climbed. Along the way you will find grades like Difficult (D), Very Severe (VS) & Extremely Severe, being split into E1, E2 etc.
TECHNICAL GRADES
This grade is an indicator for the hardest move to be found on the route, but not how many of them. They start at 4a, 4b, 4c, 5a, 5b,….& go up to 7b. As climbs continue to get harder & harder the scales have an open end.
COMBINED GRADES
The combination of the adjectical & technical grade, suggests what type of climbing it will be & how difficult. The most common combinations are S 4a, HS 4b, VS 4c, HVS 5a, E1 5b etc. For example if for an adjectival grade, the technical grade is high, you can expect maybe a single, hard, well protected move.
who is this course for?
Our guided climbing courses are suitable for a whole range of folk. From beginners seeking to experience their first time on rock, all the way to the experienced climber looking for a new challenge or wishing to tick off some of their “fridge list” climbs! Whoever you are, whatever level you’re at, Ascent Guides hope you leave inspired to explore more & learn more.

what do i need?
We’re not suggesting you to go out & spend all the money on all the latest technical kit, this is just a sensible list that in terms of keeping safe & comfortable, works. In the same vein, the weather on the day & the time of year will be big factors to help decide what you will & won’t pack. Ascent guides are more than happy to give advice and/or answer any questions you have regarding kit.
