Who is this course for?
This adventure is for those seeking a real challenge with a sense of achievement. The trek to Everest Base Camp is demanding, with long days, steep climbs, & high altitude.
Ideally, you should have prior experience with long-distance hiking & some exposure to altitude. Also, you should be able to swim & have ideally been exposed to moving water.

If you’re up for testing yourself & embracing adventure in one of the most spectacular places on Earth, this trip is for you.

Accomodation
While in Kathmandu & Pokhara, you’ll stay in 3–4* hotels, usually in shared twin rooms. During the trekking stage, accommodation will be in “tea houses,” again with twin-room sharing. Room standards vary, but all are clean & tidy. Beds come with a blanket or light duvet, which is usually sufficient at lower altitudes; however, a good-quality sleeping bag is recommended for the higher sections. Remember, two of the tea houses you’ll stay in are actually higher than Mont Blanc (4806m)!
Accommodation during the rafting stage is a little more basic. As you travel down the river, you’ll be camping in tents on beaches along the riverbanks.

TOILETS/SANITARY
Contrary to popular belief, all the toilets in the hotels & most in the tea houses are standard Western-style toilets, though you may come across the occasional “squat & drop.” Showers are available in the tea houses, usually for a small extra charge.
Toileting on the river is a little more basic. A private toilet tent is set up, using a simple sand-trench system…..essentially an alfresco “squat and drop”!

FOOD
There’s no shortage of great places to eat in Kathmandu & Pokhara, with plenty of variety to suit all tastes & budgets. While trekking, you’ll have a full choice from the tea house menus for breakfast, lunch, & dinner — plus hot drinks & a chocolate bar. Typical dishes include soups, Momos, noodle dishes, & the Sherpas’ staple, Dal Bhat. If you’re craving something more familiar, most tea houses also serve a range of Western options such as pasta, pizza, & chips. Menus usually include a good mix of meat & vegetarian dishes.
During the rafting stage, your guides will prepare a different selection of freshly cooked meals each day by the riverside.
Frequently asked questions
Visa can be obtained at Kathmandu airport, when you arrive in the country. The cost is around £60. The process is pretty straight forward, with airport staff to help you. It shouldn’t take more than 20 mins
There are loads of adventure insurance/ policies out there, offering different levels of cover. Here are 3 things your policy must include.
– High altitude cover for at least 5364m (EBC). 6000m is a safe bet.
– Helicopter evacuation. Pre-approved helicopter evacuation cover is what you’re looking for.
– Emergency Medical care & repatriation. The policy should cover medical treatment, including for altitude related illnesses like Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
Any extra belongings/kit/baggage that aren’t essential for the trekking and/or white water phases of the trip can be left at the hotel in Kathmandu.
Absolutely. If you’re short on time or simply prefer one experience over the other, you’re welcome to book either the rafting trip (£500) or the Everest Base Camp trek (£1700) individually.
You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be reasonably fit, able to walk several hours a day, and comfortable with hiking on mountain trails. Some prior hiking or regular cardio/walking will definitely make the trek more enjoyable.
Ideally yes, but previous experience isn’t required. As long as you are reasonably fit and comfortable walking or swimming, you can join.
In case of medical emergencies you may need evacuation, which would be at your expense (or your insurer’s), so it’s important that your insurance covers this. If you choose to leave for non-medical reasons, options vary depending on where you are, we’ll help arrange a safe exit, but note that additional fees or costs might apply for flights or transport.
Connectivity can vary. In lower-altitude villages and some sections of the trail, you may find mobile signal or be able to use a local SIM, but coverage becomes patchy as you gain altitude or move into more remote areas. Some tea houses do offer Wi-Fi for an additional fee, though the connection can be slow or inconsistent.
Altitude sickness is a known risk on high-altitude treks, so we build acclimatisation days into the itinerary and encourage a steady pace, plenty of hydration, and listening to your body. We recommend bringing a basic first aid kit and avoiding shared or untreated water. We provide boiled or otherwise safe drinking water throughout the trek.
We’ll be travelling in the settled post-monsoon season, which generally offers stable conditions, but mountain weather can still be unpredictable, so clear skies are never guaranteed every day.
