If you’re looking for a longer mountain adventure, the Snowdon Horseshoe can also be a fantastic progression from a standalone Crib Goch scramble.

Frequently asked questions about SCRAMBLING CRIB GOCH

Crib Goch is a serious mountain route and the suitability of the ridge depends heavily on weather and ground conditions. Wind, rain, ice, snow, low cloud and poor visibility can all significantly change the nature of the route. Your guide will assess the forecast and conditions before the day and make the final decision about whether Crib Goch is appropriate. If conditions aren’t suitable, we’ll discuss alternative options where possible. Mountain safety always comes before reaching the summit.

Crib Goch is considered a serious mountain undertaking because of its exposure. The scrambling is Grade 1, but the narrow ridge, steep drops and sustained exposure make it considerably more demanding than a normal mountain walk.

Yes. Crib Goch is classified as a Grade 1 scramble. However, Grade 1 does not mean easy. The route has significant exposure and requires confident movement over steep, rocky terrain.

No. Scrambling sits between hillwalking and rock climbing. You will use your hands to move over rocky terrain, but the emphasis is generally on moving efficiently through mountain terrain rather than climbing a technical rock route. On harder scrambles, particularly Grade 2 and Grade 3, ropework and climbing techniques may be required.

Previous scrambling experience is strongly recommended. If you’ve never scrambled before, Crib Goch probably isn’t the best place to start. Ascent Guides can recommend a more suitable introductory scrambling route and help you build the skills needed for more exposed routes.

Being guided does not make Crib Goch a beginner route. You should already have experience walking in the mountains, be comfortable with steep ground and have a good level of fitness. If you’re new to scrambling, speak to us about a suitable progression route first.

The duration depends on the route chosen, conditions, group experience and whether Crib Goch is combined with other summits or the Snowdon Horseshoe. Your guide will provide a more accurate itinerary when planning your day.
